May Commonsense Almanac by Ben Commons

Silence is a source of great strength.

-Lao Tzu

Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance of the occurrence. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for your context. It’s akin to bringing an umbrella with you when rain is expected, but it also helpsus to not take the weather personally. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us. Choose to be con(with)-siderate(the stars).

So, May. We might actually have a decently mellow month, for once. There are definitely some dangers sprinkled around, but it shouldn’t be too much of a worry for the well prepared. If you are not ready, then now is the time to catch up with it all. It should also be safer for those willing to take responsibility for their own conundrums before lashing out at others. Let us all grow with it.

Mercury stations direct on the 3rd at 9:33 am (pacific), starting down the path towards, hopefully, resolving all the strangeness that got stirred up over the last few weeks. The idea is to still pay close attention to communication, technology, et cetera, and to look for any loose ends that need attending.

The Sun sextiles Neptune on the 3rd at5:51 pm (pacific), lending us some room for relaxation and taking space from the business of our worlds. Time spent alone, in meditation, and listening to music would be appropriate. Open up to peacefulness.

The Sun trines Pluto on the 9th at 11:21 am (pacific), stirring the old pot and tempting us towards fear. This aspect would be better used to take another look at our goals and to-do lists and to make sure that they are not overly weighted down. Trim where possible and streamline as best you can.

Mercury conjoins Uranus on the 9th at 10:19 pm (pacific), frothing everything up into an uproar of sorts. Ideally, this will mark the end of a couple of weeks of rather frenzied energy and activity. It’s good for breaking through some of our thought ruts, but we should avoid dangerous conversations with others.

The Full Moon is on the 10th at 2:42 pm (pacific) in 20 degrees of Scorpio. This lunation is somewhat intense. It seems to be asking us to have some emotional catharsis.  Let it go.

Mars squares Neptune on the 11th at 10:53 am (pacific), diffusing the energy quite a bit and making for some sluggishness. Take it easy and be extra careful. It would be appropriate to go for a swim, take a hot bath, a brisk walk near water, or something of the like.

Mercury trines Saturn on the 11th at 1:15 pm (pacific), prompting us to do another progress check. The main point is to make sure we haven’t been missing anything or skipping a step. Also, make sure to give yourself credit; every little bit counts.

Mars trines Jupiter on the 12th at 3:19 am (pacific), getting the ideas swirling around. Talk things out with trusted friends and let the big ideas fly around. But don’t take hasty action; first work on brainstorming.

Mercury moves into Taurus on the 15th at 9:07 pm (pacific), where he will stay until June 6th, slowing things down quite a bit. This favors time spent enjoying natural beauty, gardening, strolling, cooking, and generally savoring life’s little pleasures. Get back into the natural rhythm of things.

Saturn trines Uranus on the 17th at 11:19 pm (pacific), pitting the status quo and change into a heated battle. This is a tricky balancing act of preserving what has served us well while being extremely adaptable to new ways of approaching our lives and the struggles therein. The main things to avoid are anxiety and fear. The main things to embrace are trust and excitement about the prospect that things can improve and flow.

Venus opposes Jupiter on the 19th at 7:12 am (pacific), tempting us into overindulgence of one sort or another. Moderation in all things is key. Finding deeper understanding with loved ones is well supported, if done with care and appreciation.

The Sun moves into Gemini on the 20th at 1:31 pm (pacific), starting another social season of getting out into our worlds. This should be mellower than most Gemini seasons, but it will still ask us to get thinking about how to be more content and connected.

Venus squares Pluto on the 25th at 9:19 am (pacific), frothing up the underbelly of relationships and financial concerns. Hopefully, we can all avoid the paranoia and work on planning out how to best achieve our goals. Take it all in steps.

The New Moon is on the 25th at 12:44 pm (pacific) in 4 degrees of Gemini. This lunation has a lot of tension in it, so it would be wise to practice caution, especially verbally. It asks us to reset our narrative/outlook so that our dispositions are lighter and we are prepared for whatever may come. Practice optimism.

Mercury sextiles Neptune on the 28th at 12:04 am (pacific), asking us to quiet the mind and to try to relax. Things could be a little murky today, so avoid important decisions or meetings. Instead, focus on finding some inner peace.

Mars opposes Saturn on the 28th at 11:54 pm (pacific), making for some distinct tension and possible discord. As per usual, practice caution and focus on working through your own issues first and foremost. Ideally, this could be used to re-bolster our determination to keep making gains and progressing through our expanding selves. Don’t over-think things.

Mars sextiles Uranus on the 30th at 7:39 pm (pacific), tossing some instability into the mix, but it could be exciting. Hopefully, we can find some way to challenge our old ways of thinking about things and maybe alter our plan of action. Choose carefully.

Mercury trines Pluto on the 31st at 5:00 am (pacific), requesting that we keep trimming down the mental chatter and focusing on the core essentials and requirements. If it’s dead wood, cut it off.

Okay, so May could end up fairly wild for some. And the world stage surely won’t be quiet and nice. Hopefully it will bring increased normalcy to our lives and give us room to adjust and integrate all the recent changes. Either way, what choice do we have but to do our best to dance to the music?
