July Common Sense Almanac by Ben Commons

Everything that exists is in a manner the seed of that which will be. ~Marcus Aurelius

Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance the occurrence. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for one’s context. It’s akin to bringing an umbrella with you when rain is expected, but also helps to not take the weather personally. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us. Choose to be con(with)-siderate(the stars).

July wants us to think that it will be significantly mellower than June, (because what was that?), but it’s just going to be a touch nicer. The reverberations of last month are still too loud for things to be truly relaxed. But it is peculiar: May and June had a kind of calm before the storm weirdness coursing through them, and July is a kind of storm, but one that will be primarily internal at this point. So yeah, there is definitely some inner work for us to do, or we risk being forced into it, which just isn’t fun. A sense of humor also seems to be very important these days. Try to enjoy the ride.

Mars moves into Libra on the 3rd at 5:32 am (Pacific), where he will stay until August 23rd. This brings an end to almost 8 months of fermentation and preparation and now begins the next phase; getting mobile. However, where you’re going is still not for you to comprehend, just that it’s time to move. Do your own thing and don’t drag others into it or get dragged into whatever strangeness surrounds you. Eyes on the road.

The Full Moon is in 12 degrees Capricorn on the 3rd at 11:52 am (Pacific). It’s a very potent one. It’s about being comfortable with your shadows, depths, and fears; can we acknowledge these things without freaking out and giving into urgency fantasies? Can we stay present despite the chaos? I guess it’s not exactly the time to peer into the abyss, but we probably should be crossing over some. Steady does it.

Mercury sextiles Venus and trines Uranus on the 4th, bringing a strong dose of whacky and wild to our interactions and relationships and possibly our finances. The nice part of working with this is to choose to do something silly and fun, to play and banter and let some of the mental tensions relax and release. On the other hand, watch out for crazies. If you’re feeling crazy, laugh with it. Embrace your inner fool.

Venus sextiles Uranus, also on the 4th, electrifying our urge to reassess our values and resources. The recent retrograde should have made some space– now we have to start choosing what we would really like to fill it with. And let us be careful with what we wish for.

Uranus stations retrograde on the 13th, emphasizing the breakthrough versus breakdown polarity. The buzz of urgency and impending unknowns has been growing and is driving us either into the swirl or into a peculiar calm. The strange calm is the nicer way to go, but this has to be coupled with definitive action; something needs to be broken through; connections need to be made between the parts of yourself that don’t interact enough.

Mercury sextiles Venus on the 14th, giving us an important chance to align the mind with more enjoyment and amusement. We really have to laugh at it all and take what joy we can from the small things and whatever sweetness comes our way. Dance with your mind.

Mercury stations retrograde on the 14th at 7:16 pm (Pacific), which will last until August 7th. This takes us down another road of undoing before another redoing. This one focuses on self-expression and having fun–or was it everything standing in the way? The trick may be to stay very positive and fun, but in realistic ways, while keeping an eye out for potential mishaps. Do play, but don’t stray.

The Sun squares Saturn on the 14th, representing potential missed steps in the growth process. There may be certain projects and distractions that need to be abandoned for the sake of more important things. There’s just not enough time to get to everything, so choose wisely. What would best serve you?

Mars trines Jupiter on the 17th, pushing some more optimistic and grandiose energies to the surface. However, it will also come with a lot of impatience for quick and easy results; which just isn’t the name of the game these days. The simple way would be to share your passions and hopes with loved ones and contemplate where you would like to go. But don’t go adding more food to your plate or anything crazy.

Mars squares Pluto on the 17th, plunging us into some cathartic cleansing of former or false desires, or possibly getting us mixed up in some messy drama. I vote for the cleansing. But this will require the courage to bring out some old festering energies and cut them up for the compost. It would be easier to just blame other people and life, but this would tend to backfire these days. Cut the crap.

Mars opposes Uranus on the 18th, blasting either into a more revelation-heavy ferment, or further down the rabbit hole of madness. Either way, we’ll all be balancing a lot of primal energetic angst with an overly civilized and jaded facet of ourselves. Either nothing is known or everything has been done: Join them together into a passion for the ongoing discovery of unique versions of eternal themes. If you were a snowflake, what would you look like?

The New Moon is in 26 degrees Cancer on the 18th at 9:24 pm (pacific). This could be a surprisingly mellow lunation if you’ve been doing what you can. The message is to take care of yourself physically, take space, and use ritual to honor the passage of time and our places in it.

Jupiter sextiles Uranus on the 21st, for a crucial exact pass that sets the tone for a close dance these two will be doing throughout February of next year and beyond. So, where are we going? (Mom? Anybody?) We’re striving to be more awesomely ourselves, but are probably overwhelmed by possibilities, and choice becomes troublesome. But do we really have to know? We’re already along for the ride, so get from it what you can instead of wondering what will be given.

The Sun moves into Leo on the 22nd at 3:01 am (pacific), lending us some brighter prospect–or at least finding us better adjusted to the current pace. We should be focusing more on the brighter sides and the silver linings, even if only for our mental health. Make sure to spend time in self-contemplation to further the inner fermentation. How would you like to be starting now? And now?

Mercury sextiles Mars on the 22nd, getting us thinking and thinking some more. What are we doing again? You tell me. Actually, let’s try to let ourselves know–it doesn’t haven’t to be certain, just get a working hypothesis going to quell your inner questioner. Be patient.

Mercury sextiles Jupiter on the 24th, pushing us to ask, yet again, where the heck are we going? Nobody knows, nor should we. Anyways, the answers for these quandaries are probably right inside of us, waiting to pop on out when we are ready for them. But we may have to get past the inherent duality of the mind for this; which may mean that we can know, but only in wordless ways for now.

Mercury trines Uranus on the 25th, stimulating our minds with restless energy and the need for newness. So, keep yourself occupied and learning; find something exciting to try or do or study. And definitely keep laughing at yourself and existence.

Mercury conjoins the Sun on the 28th, kicking the recent inner shifts into high gear. It’s a great chance to really be in ourselves, adjusting our internal monologues towards more self-sustained joy. The idea is to take your self-growth/awesomeness very seriously, without taking anything too seriously. Laugh with the cosmos.

The Sun trines Uranus on the 30th, offering us some ripe opportunities for jumping into more now-appropriate selves. However, this will take initiative and imagination or the opportunity could walk on by. Increase the goodness when possible.

Venus trines Saturn on the 31st, asking us to commit to some of the ideas we’ve been kicking around in our heads. I mean, we can still change our minds, for now, but some actions need some ritualistic attention. Confirm your desired path.

Well, yeah, maybe it is a lot, disguised as not as much. But it does seem like a good time to get all your ‘updates’ and get caught up with you version July’12. Things are progressing quickly, and while we may not know where we are heading, we’d best be getting some things done in preparation for what will come: And, since we don’t really know, it means internal work and growth into more adaptability. Finding more enjoyment in the midst of this madness is definitely on the list of things to do. So, let’s do it.
